Prevent Future Injuries From Happening With Physical Therapy!

In the search for a life free of lower back pain, two patients, we’ll call Alex and Jordan, started on a journey toward recovery, but their paths diverged, leading to very different outcomes. This story highlights the impact of physical therapy and why sticking to the treatment plans is so important.
Alex and Jordan both suffered from debilitating lower back pain that affected their daily activities and overall quality of life. Both turned to Rebound Physical Therapy to find answers. Initially, their experiences were similar, and both found pain relief and improved mobility in the initial phases of physical therapy. That’s where things got interesting!
The Onset of Recovery
At the initial evaluation, both Alex and Jordan had a thorough evaluation. This comprehensive assessment included a detailed analysis of their medical history and physical examination to pinpoint the nature of their lower back issues. Their physical therapists designed personalized treatment plans tailored to their specific needs, including the following:
- Manual Therapy: This hands-on approach involved soft tissue techniques and joint mobilizations designed to alleviate pain, improve range of motion, and reduce muscle tension.
- Targeted Exercises: Understanding the importance of muscular strength and mobility for lower back health, we incorporate exercises that address kinetic chain deficits and promote functional stability, along with stretches to improve overall mobility.
- Education: A distinctive aspect of the care at Rebound Physical Therapy was the emphasis on patient education. Both individuals received guidance on proper body mechanics, ergonomics, and lifestyle modifications to prevent future episodes of lower back pain. This education aimed to empower patients with the knowledge and tools necessary to maintain their health and avoid recurrence.

Patient Success
“I just moved to town and got referred to Rebound PT from a bodybuilding gym. I needed a therapist who specialized in athletes. Steve Yuly is one of the best physical therapists I have encountered. He’s very kind, listens closely to any of your concerns, and will stay with you during the entire visit (not pass you off to a PT assistant). I am 9 months post hip replacement and 10 years post ACL replacement. This is my 6th PT office in 10 years and I am so grateful to have found Steve- he was able to identify areas in my pelvis, iliosoas and calf that were so tight from misalignment. I noticed an improvement immediately the next day and was able to get back to weight lifting within the month. He is also excellent with neck/jaw tightness. He took the time to explain why I was misaligned. The building also shares space with an athletic training center called Off the Field. Plenty of spaces to park too. As a registered nurse and case manager for workers’ comp, I strongly recommend Steve for any physical rehabilitation needs.” -C.S.
The Divergence of Paths
As their therapy progressed, Alex, feeling much better and eager to return to everyday life, decided to stop physical therapy prematurely. Despite still experiencing occasional discomfort and stiffness, Alex believed that the worst was over and that the remaining issues would resolve on their own.
Jordan, on the other hand, chose a different path. Recognizing the importance of completing his physical therapy program, Jordan not only finished the prescribed sessions but also followed the advice given by his therapists at home. Jordan continued with the exercises, made recommended changes to routine, posture, and body mechanics, and started engaging in regular exercise every week.
The Impact of Choices
Over time, the consequences of their choices became evident. Alex, having stopped therapy too soon, relapsed into cycles of dysfunction and pain. The initial relief faded, giving way to episodes of back pain that became more frequent and severe, leading to a longer and more challenging recovery process. Alex’s journey was marked by frustration and setbacks, a constant reminder of the opportunity missed by not fully committing to his recovery.
Jordan’s experience, however, told a story of triumph and prevention. By fully resolving the back pain and adhering to the preventive measures recommended by his therapists, Jordan not only reclaimed a life free from pain but also built a foundation strong enough to prevent future injuries.
The Lessons Learned
This tale of two paths highlights a critical lesson: the journey to recovery does not end with the cessation of pain. It requires a commitment to complete the prescribed physical therapy program and to integrate the recommended lifestyle adjustments into daily life.
Alex’s story is a cautionary tale about the risks of premature discontinuation of therapy. In contrast, Jordan’s success story underscores the value of perseverance, compliance, and the adoption of a proactive approach to health.
Your Guide to a Home Exercise Program for Lower Back Pain
A Home Exercise Program (HEP) for lower back pain is a key part of physical therapy, designed to complement in-clinic sessions and support recovery. This personalized program includes exercises that address kinetic chain deficits, promote functional strength and stability, improve mobility, and enhance overall back function.
A HEP’s ultimate goal is to alleviate pain and provide individuals with the tools and knowledge to prevent future back issues.
Components of a Home Exercise Program for Back Pain
- Functional Training: Focuses on identifying kinetic chain deficits and applying both targeted and integrated exercises and activities to create functional mobility and stability. This approach helps the body move efficiently and reduces stress on the lower back.
- Mobility and Stretching: Tight or restricted muscles can affect lower back pain. Stretching exercises aim to increase the range of motion, reduce tension, and improve function.
- Postural Exercises: Poor posture is a common contributor to lower back pain. Exercises focusing on improving posture help individuals learn to maintain proper positioning, reducing strain on the back.
Importance of Performing Exercises at Home
Performing prescribed exercises at home is vital for several reasons. Firstly, it facilitates the continuation of the healing process between physical therapy sessions, allowing for more consistent progress. Secondly, it empowers patients to take an active role in their recovery and management of lower back pain.
Consistency in performing these exercises can significantly improve the effectiveness of the therapy, leading to quicker relief from pain and a reduced risk of recurrence. In addition, home exercise programs help individuals maintain their back health and prevent future injuries. Incorporating these exercises into their daily routine, patients develop healthier habits, contributing to long-term spinal health and overall well-being!

- 8 ounces Pizza Dough, room temperature
- 1-½ Tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup Pizza Sauce
- ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
- 1-½ cups shredded Mozzarella cheese
- 1 teaspoon olive oil, for drizzling on cooked pizza
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 450° F. Brush 1-½ Tablespoons of olive oil in bottom of 12-inch cast-iron skillet; set aside. Place crust in prepared cast-iron skillet; gently push it to the corners of the pan. Spread 1 cup of pizza sauce over surface of dough leaving ½-inch border around the edge. Top with ¼ cup of the grated Parmesan cheese and 1-½ cups of the shredded mozzarella cheese.
